ASL Nature Series: Secrets of Mason Mill Park

  • Creek PATH Trailhead 1400 McConnell Drive Decatur, Georgia, 30033 United States (map)

Join us for the second in a series of four FREE nature programs with ASL interpretation provided by Sign1News|Sign1Studios|Sign1U. Members of the DHH community are invited for an exciting nature walk on the trails at Mason Mill Park. Your guide will be Ranger Jonah McDonald, the DeKalb County Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park. He will share all the secrets of the forest he's learned over the years: about plants, animals, history, and more. We will walk paved trails, dirt trails, and boardwalks in search of the park's secrets. All voiced content will be interpreted in ASL. This program will last 2 hours.

Find Ranger Jonah at the South Peachtree Creek trailhead near the Mason Mill Tennis Center (McConnell Dr & Mason Mill Rd). Wear appropriate footwear, dress for the weather, and bring a refillable water bottle, snack, and hiking sticks if you need them. This program content is designed for adults and kids, but all ages are welcome. Public restrooms are near the playground and bathrooms are available at DeKalb Tennis Center when the Pro Shop is open (top of the purple pyramid). Leashed dogs are welcome. This program will be held, rain or shine, unless conditions are dangerous.

Trail surface & accessibility: Walking distance: 2 miles. This walk is mostly under tree canopy, but a few sections are exposed to sun and wind. This program mostly stays on durable surfaces (concrete & boardwalk) but we will also take a few single track hiking trails with dirt surfaces that have some roots and rocks. There are a few places where the grade is slightly above 5%. Paved trail width is greater than 10 feet and curb cuts provide appropriate transitions between surfaces. Questions if this program will work for your mobility? Contact Ranger Jonah: jpmcdonald@dekalbcountyga.gov. Register here and please note DeKalb County’s Waiver & Release.
