Edible Nature Walk for Families

  • Mason Mill Park 1400 McConnell Drive Decatur, Georgia, 30033 United States (map)

PARTNER EVENT

Families are invited to walk with Ranger Jonah McDonald, the DeKalb County Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park, to learn about what is edible in Atlanta forests. Bring your curiosity about botany and explore the forest looking for edible fruits, nuts, seeds, and plants. No, we won't be eating things today, but it'll be fun to learn together! The content of this program is designed for elementary-aged kids and their parents. We will walk the paved South Peachtree Creek Trail through the forest of Mason Mill Park for about 1.5 miles. This program will last 2 hours.

Find Ranger Jonah at the benches in the center of the parking lot across from the South Peachtree Creek trailhead near the Mason Mill Tennis Center (McConnell Dr & Mason Mill Rd).

Wear comfortable footwear and dress for the weather. Bring a refillable water bottles and snacks for you and your kids. Public restrooms are near the playground and bathrooms are available at DeKalb Tennis Center when the Pro Shop is open (top of the purple pyramid). This program content is designed for adults and older children, but all ages are welcome. Leashed dogs are welcome. This program will be held, rain or shine, unless conditions are dangerous.

Trail surface & accessibility: Walking distance: 1.5 miles. This walk is mostly under tree canopy, but a few sections are exposed to sun and wind. This program stays on durable surfaces (concrete & boardwalk) the whole time. There are a few places where the grade is slightly above 5%. Trail width is greater than 10 feet and curb cuts provide appropriate transitions between surfaces. Boardwalk railings are 5 feet tall, but gaps between rails allow for obstructed views. DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs is committed to providing inclusive and accessible programs. Reasonable accommodations may be available upon request. To request an accommodation, please contact the program organizer at least 48 hours prior to the event. Questions if this program will work for your mobility? Contact Ranger Jonah: jpmcdonald@dekalbcountyga.gov. Register here and please note DeKalb County’s Waiver & Release.
